What Does an Alder Do?

Have you ever found yourself asking “what in the world is an alder, and what do they do?” Well, you’ve come to the right spot!

With the help of Madison District 8 alder candidate Ayomi Obuseh, we’re gonna tell you exactly what an alderperson does and how you can find yours.

While being an alderperson is generally a part-time role, they still have quite a few duties they have to fulfill for their constituents. These include, but are not limited to, attending meetings, making policy decisions, passing resolutions, passing the annual city budget, approving license and permits, notifying constituents of snow removal, and working with constituents to answer inquiries and complaints.

These duties vary from city to city, so be sure to check your city’s website to learn more about specific duties. If you’re interested in learning who your alderperson is (or any of your other elected officials), be sure to visit myvote.wi.gov today!
